Restaurant Review: Umbuntu, Napa CA

My husband took me to Umbuntu in Napa, CA – this lovely restaurant (and yoga studio) a while ago. He’s such a patient and kind meat eater, willing to take me on food adventures to try vegetarian restaurants (and for the record, he even enjoyed it!).  Tucked downtown Napa, this posh restaurant is open, airy with lots of earthy decor gracing the tall walls. The ambiance is comfortable and the staff was friendly as we were seated. Looking toward the back of the restaurant, you can see the stairs into their yoga studio. I might have to go try a class sometime…

We were seated at the long bench along the wall with tables lined up. It was a bit too tight for my tastes. I didn’t love sitting elbow to elbow with fellow diners. I felt a bit uncomfortable and didn’t feel like I could talk freely and comfortably with my husband across the table from me.  Because we were so close to other people and because lighting was dim and because I didn’t bring my “big” camera, I just took flashless shots with my point-and-shoot. That means I don’t have any ‘great’ pics to share. So, we’re just going to have to say these are artsy, gritty shots done this way for the sake of art, ok? :)

If you walk in from the back door (like we did), you’re sure to be impressed with the line up of awards and articles framed on the wall of the hallway to the dining room praising the owner/founder Sandy Lawrence and partner/executive chef Jeremy Fox and chef Deanie Fox. Since we dined, Jeremy Fox has departed Umbuntu and Aaron London, the very young (26!) executive chef, has taken on this role. I’d be curious to return and see if I can ‘taste’ the difference.

The restaurant is following a green philosophy by growing a lot of their own produce and their menu is graced with bold fonts for each ingredient grown in their gardens.  I ordered their signature salad (don’t remember the name) with the beet ‘dirt’. It had great flavor and the (optional) cheese was a nice touch. This salad basically has everything in their garden, so the ingredients change with the season.

As much as I loved each dish that was brought to our table, the highlight of the meal were the appetizers! They were to amazing. We had the lavender almonds,  chickpea clusters, and some ‘crackers’ of sorts with an avocado dip. We talked about the almonds for days, weeks, and even months afterward. In fact, that’s what inspired my own attempt!

The presentation of each dish was spectacular You could tell that the chefs took each dish to heart and carefully placed each item of food on the plate. Gorgeous! And since they work in an open kitchen, it’s easy to see them slaving away on each service.

The desserts were pretty good. I got one of their signature desserts – the cheesecake in a jar. It came out in a darling jar with some fruit layered in between the very soft, pudding like cheesecake with a lovely crust on the bottom. There were a couple of cookies on the side that were tasty. Overall, while it had good flavor, I wasn’t spectacularly impressed. Granted, I’m a big dessert snob, so for others it was probably great. It was good. Not great. This surprised me considering all the praise over the pastry chef on the wall.

My main regret about this restaurant is that even though I consider myself an average to above-average ‘foodie’, I really had a hard time deciphering the menu. I didn’t know what half the things were or how they were prepared. It made it next to impossible to decide what to get and then when I did finally decide and order, what I got wasn’t really what I thought I was getting. For example, we ordered a pasta dish and it ended up being very sweet. I did not want ‘sweet’ and the menu didn’t give any indicators that it might be sweet. I wish they’d use a bit more ‘plain’ English to a certain degree so the average (and maybe even slightly above average) foodie can know what they’re ordering.

I tried to ask a lot of questions, but I think we got a new server because they didn’t know the dishes really well and had to request assistance from other servers. I’d say service was just ‘ok’ but I blame it on the newness of our particular server. Everyone else seemed just fine.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this restaurant to any food loving vegetarian. It’s a must-try place. Prices a are a bit high, so for us, it won’t happen often, but hopefully we’ll go again soon so I can check out the new chef and see how the food/service is this time.

Spread the Restaurant Review

Whenever I travel for business, I try to go to a vegetarian restaurant every time. I like to find unique and local vegetarian cuisine. This time, I selected Spread in San Diego, California. I’ve categorized my feedback into chucks for you…

FOOD:
All their food is from local farmers markets and such, much of which is organic. love the concept and idea that everything is local/organic/etc. And I love that the menu changes with the seasons.  They had a reasonable selection of both vegetarian and vegan options. Continue reading

Extraordinary Desserts Review

Extraordinary Desserts

If you’ve never been to San Diego, California,  you need to plan a trip – stat. If for no other reason than to visit this darling dessert shop.  They have two locations in the San Diego area. I visited the one on 5th Street, right next to Balboa Park and right next to Nature-Express, a fascinating little vegetarian restaurant. (Unfortunately, I didn’t get to eat there since I had just come from another veg place across town. Had I known, I would have planned that one a little better).

Located in a cute cottage style house with both indoor and outdoor seating, this place is a little taste of heaven. I think I committed every single one of the 7 deadly sins just walking in and eating here!

My review of Texas Roadhouse

There’s a new Texas Roadhouse in a neighboring town and my husband (meat eater) really wanted to check it out. I normally don’t have a problem with steak houses in general since I am usually happy to have a baked potato and side salad and call it a night.  So, I went along with it.

Overall, the service was good, atmosphere fun and lively. But for a vegetarian? Not good. I just have to spread the news to all my vegetarian friends…

VEGETARIANS BEWARE!!! I was excited that they had a “country veg plate” (where you get a choice of 4 sides) that I was thinking would be perfect for me, the vegetarian. I assumed the green beans would probably be cooked in bacon, so I thought I’d ask just to make find out for sure what was vegetarian and what was not. So, I asked the waitress if any of the sides had meat products in them.

Thankfully, our waitress was very honest (not all would be so honest, I doubt). She informed me that almost all of their veggie dishes have meat products in them!!!

  • Mashed potatoes and seasoned rice are both cooked in chicken broth.
  • Baked sweet potatoes are rolled in bacon grease.
  • Baked white potatoes are rolled in bacon grease.
  • Green beans have bacon.
  • Baked beans have ham.

That leaves just the house salad, mixed vegetables and apple sauce as meat free options (I’m not sure about the steak fries – I didn’t ask).  Even the house salad has eggs and cheese on it (which you can request to leave off if you don’t eat those products) and the vegetables have butter (which you can request to leave off, also). There were no other options for vegetarians, except maybe mac and cheese on the kids’ menu, but who knows… That might have bacon or ham in it, too.

I was HIGHLY disappointed – especially since I was so starving.

Bluphie’s in Madison WI

Another stop I made in my 8 day journey was to Madison Wisconsin. There, my friend decided we needed to go to one her her favorites. It’s a darling restaurant near one of the lakes in Madison called Bluephies. It’s veggie friendly, an almost California-cuisine type restaurant that even has gluten-free options.

They had amazing food and so much to choose from! I had tomato basil soup (veggie based!) and a portabello mushroom sandwich with the most amazing aoli sauce on it. It was fabulous.

But the best part of the meal was the Tomato Olive Butter served with warm sourdough bread. My sister, Renee and I were were analyzing it to see just how it was made. We figured out butter, cream cheese, kalamata olives, sun dried tomatoes and some other spices. But we couldn’t figure it out just exactly.

So, I had an idea… They have a cookbook they are selling at the front. So, at the end of our meal, I flipped through the book. Sure enough! It was there. So, I had my sister ‘fake’ pose with the book to ‘show where we went to eat’ in typical tourist fashion. And then she flipped the book open, I zoomed in and snapped the shot. And we went on our way. I now have the recipe. For free. :) (hehe!!! shhhh… Don’t tell!)

Cafe Sunflower in Atlanta, GA

Just a quick peek in to give a quick review of Cafe Sunflower… I have some vegan peanut butter cookies coming soon, too. So, check back in the next few days.

I went to Cafe Sunflower in the Buckhead area of Atlanta. Per usual, I had the most difficult time deciding what to order. At the recommendation of the waitress, I got the Orzo Eggplant Lasagna (no noodles). It was layers of baked portabella mushroom, eggplant, zucchini, oven roasted red pepper, orzo pasta and tofu ricotta. Served over roasted shallot marinara and topped with grilled asparagus. Plus, I ordered a Mixed Green Salad with Basalmic dressing and a Pomegranate Lemonade.

It was okay, but I wasn’t thrilled. The mixed green salad was very large with basalmic dressing and was nice but nothing to write home about. The Lasagna had good flavor but it tasted a bit heavy/greasy for my tastes. The best part was the asparagus on top. It was very pretty though, with layered vegetables and no noodles. And the the Pomegranate Lemonade was…. Yum.

The place was decorated well and atmosphere was nice. And, of course, the presentation was good with all the layers of veggies. Thankfully it was on the company’s tab because the bill was pretty high, in my opinion, for the meal I had. ($31)

I then went just two blocks down the street to my favorite Cafe Intermezzo for coffee and dessert. I was pretty full from dinner, so I decided to take it to go. Since it was so warm out, I got an iced coffee and a light berry cake. I ate them once I got back in my room.

Golden Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant

Me, my foodie sister, and our two foodie, vegetarian friends – dogeared girl and the grumpy monkey – were on a quest to 1) eat lunch together and 2) eat some good veggie food. After reading so many great reviews about this supposedly fabulous Soul Food Vegan Restaurant in Oakland, Souley Vegan, we all agreed that would be our destination. Unfortunately for us, when we pulled up to the restaurant, they were completely closed – bars across the entire front door and window area (I think it was because it was a Sunday afternoon. They didn’t look closed closed). Disappointed, we started wracking our brains to come up with a good alternative.

One of us in the group happened to notice another vegetarian restaurant just across the street from us – Golden Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant. It’s a Vietnamese/Asian style restaurant that is completely vegetarian (not vegan, but they do have plenty vegan options). Thrilled that we were once again on the path of eating at a vegetarian restaurant, we all agreed this was going to be the place of choice for us today.

It’s a bit of a hole in the wall. Not too elegant – especially the rolled up newspaper stabilizing our table – but it was full of people, so we figured it couldn’t be too bad. The first thing I noticed when sitting down was the fun and eclectic orange chopsticks on the plate. They made my day. And the second thing I noticed was the massive menu. As per normal when I’m in a vegetarian restaurant, they have way too many choices. Well, not really. I’m just not used to it. Thankfully, the group was willing to go family style and order all kinds of things to taste and share.

Our meal came out literally 4 or so minutes after we ordered. So, huge “kudos” to the nice waitress and cooks on speed! It was all nicely presented, hot (or cold if it was supposed to be) and on cute plates.

We ordered the Lotus Salad, Spicy Thai Fried Rice, Sauted Basil Mushrooms, and Vietnamese Crepes. We were notified that the Crepes could take up to 30 minutes to make and we decided to go ahead with it anyway because it sounded so good. They must have been exaggerating because it probably took no more than about 10 minutes after our other dishes landed at the table.

Each dish was amazing. The Lotus Salad had a lovely light vinegarette dressing over cabbage, carrots, tofu, peanuts, and other tasty items. The spicy Thai rice had the prefect amount of texture and spicy flavor to compliment the mushrooms. And the crepe… It was different than we all imagined. It ended up being a sort of omlette of sorts with vegetables and bean sprouts. It was served with the same vinegarette as the salad and mint and cilantro. It was delicious.

We all ordered Thai Iced tea as well – “Vegan or regular?” I love that stuff. They didn’t mess it up at all. It was delicious.

At the end of our leisurely meal with much laughter and story telling, we were all surprised at how cheap the bill actually was. We all ate, got our fill, and took some home for about $15 each ($60 total).

So, although we didn’t get any fried “chicken” or mac-n-cheese or okra, we left full, happy and with amazing flavors lingering on our tongues. I would most definitely go back.

(Here’s the paper holding up our table. ha!)

Veggie Grill

I discovered the most amazing little Vegetarian restaurant in Irvine CA. I often travel down here on business and I’ve made it my goal to go to different veggie restaurants while I’m here. I was surprised at how many there are down here. So, I’ll slowly be picking them off one at a time.

Today, I went to Veggie Grill on Campus Drive. It’s right across from the college in a casual shopping center that includes other shops such as Trader Joe’s, Peets, Golden Spoon Yogurt, and what looks like a non-conventional theater. The interior is designed with fresh, modern lines even down to the fine details in the bathroom and on the outside patio. It definitely as a clean and refreshing feel with earth tones, lots of wood, and touches of green, orange and red.

The Veggie Grill serves traditional American “fast” cuisine (View the Menu). They have salads, sandwiches, burgers, and the most heavenly little “Sweetheart Fries” – sweet potato fries with ranch dressing. Almost all the items on their menu include some version of a faux meat product, so if you aren’t into faux meat, it may no be for you. However, I don’t mind it and they did it so well, it was a little scary. According to their nutritional philosophy and “goodness guide“, they have built their menu around the vegetarian, plant-based proteins because of the benefits of having protein in your diet. (sorry for the bad pics, they’re on my camera phone. I pack very light on these biz trips, so the big camera has to stay home.)

I ordered their newest sandwich that was actually not on the menu. It’s their special grilled “chick’n” with a papaya salsa, avocado, mango, spinach, and tomato. The flavor was truly spectacular. The way the savory and sweet flavors complimented each other was perfection. I, of course, had to get the Sweetheart Fries on the side.

I love their collection of drinks. They have an assortment of teas and lemonade. I got a lightly sweetened hibiscus tea. It wasn’t quite sweet enough for my taste, so I added a bit more sweetner to it. I’m 85% sure that what I added was agave nectar (it was too runny to be honey). Oh, and since I ordered to-go, I was impressed to see that the cup they gave me was a Greenware cup made from corn and is 100% compostable. And along that line, their cups and to-go containers are all recycled and recyclable.

For dessert, I decided to pick up one of their pumpkin cheesecakes. After all that huge chicken sandwich and the fries which I already couldn’t finish, I could barely take a few bites of the cheesecake. But it was good. All their desserts are free of dairy, cholesterol and refined sugars. For being dairy free, it was surprisingly creamy and tasted much like a traditional cheesecake. Maybe in a few hours when I have more room in this Veggie Grill filled stomach of mine, I can finish the cheesecake. I hope so!

I think I could eat there every day and be happy about it! If you’re ever in the area, it’s completely worth heading out there for a meal.

Crack Pancakes (aka Lemon-Cottage Cheese Pancakes)

Pre-Script: Sorry for the absence and lack of blog posts recently. I’ve been traveling a LOT (I mean a LOT) for business and a vacation, so I haven’t been around much. I also haven’t been cooking much, which means nothing to blog about. However, these amazing pancakes lured me out of my dark cave and I just have to share.

Lemon-Cottage Cheese Pancakes. They are out-of-this-world good. My husband and I first had them when we went on our anniversary trip to Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. We ate at the Big 3 Diner there at the Inn and got these pancakes as part of our breakfast. We were in heaven. We loved them so much we ordered them a second time, the morning we were checking out.

Big 3 Pancakes:

I then ran out on the internet to see if I could find the recipe. I DID! They are identical. I made them yesterday morning for brunch. My husband and I are calling them “Crack Pancakes”. They are entirely too good and too addicting.

My Pancakes:

We love them so much, we decided we need to show them off to our friends and have a brunch. (Yeah, we’re weird. haha!) :)

GO MAKE THEM! You’ll get addicted, too. (I cut the below recipe in half)

I want to go here!

Vegan Soul Food. It got amazing reviews on Yelp. When I go, I’ll be sure to take pics and tell you all about it. My sister and I are planning a trip with some other veg friends of ours. I can’t wait! (And if you get there before me, I want to hear all about it).
