Traveling Veggie

Whenever I take off on any trip away from my safe Veggie-friendly bubble that is the San Francisco Bay Area, I’m always a little worried about what I’m going to be able to find to eat – especially getting protein is a challenge. It’s amazing what some restaurants consider food for a vegetarian. (No, I don’t want a ‘green salad’ with iceberg lettuce as my dinner).

Early this morning, I ate my breakfast at home and brought a banana as a snack, but by the time my delayed flight was set to leave, it was noon. And I was hungry again. I discovered Terminal 2 has a 360 Gourmet Burrito. I haven’t been to a 360 in a very very long time, but I figured I’d try it out. It was perfect.

They changed the menu format since last time I’ve been. And I think it’s for the better. Now, it’s a build your meal style. You pick what you want (burrito, bowl, salad, quesadilla), your meat (smoked tofu for me!), and style the meat is cooked (curry, teriyaki, Thai, garlic lemon). I got a Thai Tofu Salad. It was fabulous and filling. The salad was a fresh dark leaf lettuce with tomatoes and all topped in sauteed smoked tofu, bell peppers, onion, carrots and bean sprouts. They gave me a salad dressing to use, but the juices from the veggies and tofu mix on top were dressing enough. And the spicy, intense flavor with the tofu (protein!) was satisfying and filling.

I looked up the nutritional value from the meal and it wasn’t too bad, either! Just 433 calories for my salad with tofu. The fat content was a bit high, but not the end of the world (30g).

Meal #2 of the trip was another success. Directly next door to my hotel is a Sweet Tomatoes. I walked over there for dinner tonight and munched on a mixed salad, soup, and a very yummy orange cranberry lowfat muffin. I’m still full from dinner!

South City Kitchen in Atlanta

If you’re ever in Atlanta, Georgia and want some good Southern food without all the meat, check out South City Kitchen Midtown Atlanta (There’s also one in Smyrna, but I don’t know where that is). It’s the most elegant Southern-cooking restaurant you’re bound to find anywhere. Imagine collard greens, fried green tomatoes, and grits meets elegance with white table cloths and candlelight. It makes for a fabulous evening out.

Awkward Moments

Everyone has them. You know the kind. When you go for a handshake and they go for a hug. And then you both go the same way for a hug and almost kiss instead. The moments that you squirm in your seat and wonder if you should acknowledge it. And then you think about later and it still makes you squirm. How about those times when you someone’s fly is down and you look and then don’t really want to look again to see if that was what you saw. And do you say something to them? Do you let it go? You don’t really know them… But it still bothers you?

How does this relate to Veg SF Blog?

Thanksgiving was spectacular. Lots and lots of traditional dishes served in the good, old-fashioned style that I grew up with. And, I’m slightly spoiled. My mom makes me my own special veggie gravy and makes sure all the sides are veg friendly. She makes the stuffing with no meat broth and only puts marshmallows on half the sweet potato casserole. It’s a meal I can definitely enjoy.

This year, we had a distant relative of my Dad’s join us. She wanted to visit with us and my Grandma since she hasn’t seen anyone in many many years. Come to find out, she’s vegetarian. So, I filled her in that she should be able to eat just about all of the sides and she was excited to know she had “come to the right house” for a veggie-friendly Thanksgiving!

As I was munching away on my plate of food, I noticed she had not only taken a huge scoop of marshmallow topped sweet potatoes, but she had also grabbed a spoonful of the jello salad. My sister and I shared a glance across the table and went on. Do I say something and chance sounding like a know-it-all vegetarian? Maybe she knows and is less strict. Maybe she’s innocent. Do I let her sit there and eat it? So, I sat there and did nothing. And she didn’t notice I didn’t have any of that on my plate. But I still cringed.

It’s interesting how much of the veggie world is still fairly clueless about the reach of meat based products. Even me. I know that inevitably, in my lifetime, I’ll probably have a smidgen of meat-based something just because I can’t know EVERYTHING about EVERY food item that touches my lips. But still… I try my best and continue to cringe whenever I see a veggie eating something that I know is clearly not.

*shudder*

Happy Thanksgiving!

May your stuffing be sausage-free, may your gravy be lump and meat free, may your meal be healthy, may your pie crust be flaky, may your tofurky be juicy, and may your turkey be safely eating at the table among friends. :)

I hope you have a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving.

Fresh Mozzarella and Tomato Sandwiches

I know this technically belongs in a spring/summer post, but I can’t help it. I love this sandwich, so I decided to share it with you today instead of waiting for next spring or summer. They make a perfect on-the-go meal for picnics or lunches.

It’s so easy, has a lot of flavor and is just downright fabulous! Don’t take my word for it – try it yourself. (A friend of mine recently used my recipe for a Book Club brunch she hosted and according to her feedback, it was well received). Now, your turn!
