Things I miss

I haven’t been veg all my life, I started eating veggie about 13 years or so ago. I seem to get asked this question frequently. “How long have you been a vegetarian?” After I respond, generally it’s followed by “Is your whole family vegetarian?” And then, inevitably, the last question will be something along the lines of “Don’t you miss meat?”

No, I really don’t miss meat. It’s been so long ago, that I think I’ve almost forgotten what it tastes like. In fact, on occasion I have to hand my veggie dog over to my husband and ask him if it’s really fake because I can’t tell. He nibbles on it, makes a yucky face and confirms that it is indeed faux meat.

What I do miss, however, are some items that have meat product in them – namely foods with gelatin. (For those non veg readers thinking “gelatin???”, here’s an article for you). These foods include marshmallows (i.e, rice crispy treats, s’mores, roasted on an open fire), jello, jello based desserts, Starbursts, etc. Sometimes I get lucky and find a veggie replacement at a health food store. But, not always. And some things just aren’t the same. They don’t taste right or the texture is just odd.

I discovered a place, however, that seems to do the trick at helping with the craving. The Vegan Store. An online/mail-order store with a bunch of very cool and very good replacements. I make an order about twice a year that typically includes marshmallows, gelatin, “fruit jel”, gravy, pre-made crispy treats, tofu jerky, and whatever else hits my fancy. The only problem is this: I gorge myself on the food when it comes in the house. For example yesterday, I made Strawberry Fruit Jel. I had about 3 bites of it last night. And today, I polished the rest of it off. 95% of the bowl to myself in one sitting (the other 5% was what I ate last night). Yum.

I went poking around online today trying to decide what to get in my next order. Unfortunately, they don’t have any more of the Fruit Gel in stock. (Or maybe that is “fortunately”). But just looking through the products online, my mouth is already watering for rice crispy treats. It’s been far too long since I’ve had one. They even have “ricemallow creme” now in either regular or strawberry flavors! Maybe now I can make one of those yummy fruit dips that everyone raves over and yet I have never tried. An order is definitely going to need to be placed – and soon. Gotta stock up for the holidays!

Summer Vegetable Tart in Winter

A friend and I are beginning to discuss a Christmas dinner party we want to co-host for our closest friends. We don’t want to do a traditional holiday meal since all of December will likely be filled with traditional foods and we don’t want to get sick of it. We are also going to have a wide variety of people, tastes, likes and dislikes. So, I’ve started my recipe search for a yummy main dish that can serve for the vegetarians (er – vegetarian – I think I’m the only one).

I discovered this recipe for Summer Vegetable Tart on epicurious.com. It seems it can serve as both a main dish for me and as an elegant side for the others. That means I’ll have to double or triple the recipe, for sure!

After reading some of the comments/reviews, instead of following the recipe exactly, I’d like to modify the recipe to use philo dough and some different vegetables like portobello mushrooms and some herbs.

Yay or nay? Any thoughts or suggestions?

If I make this recipe, I’ll be sure to write a full review and show some pictures of it.

Natural Oat Streusel Baked Apples

Let me introduce you to an “Angela Concoction“. I learned this technique from my mom. Drag random things out of the cupboard and make something from it. It doesn’t have a name and you don’t really know what it is.

My friend gave me a big bag of apples fresh off her tree yesterday, and I knew I had to use them somehow. But I didn’t want a traditional apple recipe. So, I attempted an Angela Concoction, much to my husband’s dismay. (He always gets worried when the response to his “What are you making?” question is “Umm… A concoction.”). And the attempt was met with success, I might add! (The hubby loved it. So did I. We both had to go back for seconds.)

The end result was something like a baked apple, but with a high-intensity flavored, chewy oatmeal cookie on top with an orange glaze. Yum!

Amici’s Pizza & Fenton’s Ice Cream

I kidnapped my husband last Friday evening without telling him where were going. I had my eye on the new Fenton’s Ice Cream parlor that I had heard recently went into the Nut Tree in Vacaville. Not wanting the traditional hamburgers and hot dogs available at Fenton’s, I found a restaurant a few doors down called Amici’s East Coast Pizzeria.
